Location and Map of Santorini

Santorini is located in the Southern Aegeon Pelagos in the Prefecture of Cyclades. Its history is large and starts from the ancient years.

The island was at first called "Strogyli" (greek word for "Round") because of its round shape. About in 1500bc, the volcano of Santorini exploded violently and due to that explosion, a larfe part of the surface of the island was sunk. The island then took the shape that has in our days, split in four islands: the main island, Palaia Kameni, Nea Kameni and Thirasia. In the main island, the explosion resulted in the creation of "Caldera".

Santorini is one of the most visited islands in Greece during Summer, both from Greeks and foreign travellers. During your vacation in the island it is worth to visit the capital city of Fira. There you can walk in the small roads, find lots of stores with souvenirs and traditional local products. Fira is one of the places where you can admire the view from Caldera (specially sunset). In Fira, you can also find many bars and clubs, as it is the center of the night life in Santorini.

Oia and Imerovigli are two villages, north of Fira. The strips there are more peaceful than Fira, but the Caldera view is as beautiful as in the capital city. Kamari, Perissa and Perivolos are also higly visited villages in the island. There, you can see the famous sandy "Black Beach", one of the best beaches of the island. These villages are not famous for their night life, but there you can find many restaurants with traditional food and fresh fish(Tavernes). Kamari, Perissa and Perivolos are located in the East coast of the island. In the south of the island, you should visit the famous "Red Beach" of Santorini.
Do not forget also to visit the islands of Palaia and Nea Kameni and Thirasia. Palaia and Nea Kameni are two parts of the volcano of Santorini (the rest of it is under water after the violent explosion of 1500 bc). There you can go with small boats that are departing from the old port in Fira.
